Life, moreover, presents phenomena enough in which the individual in dread gazes almost desirously at guilt and yet fears it … However, in view of all such cases, we have yet to wait until there come forward individuals who, in spite of their outward gifts, do not choose the broad way, but rather pain and distress and dread … so that they lose as it were what it is only too seductive and dangerous to possess. Such a battle is indubitably very exhausting, since there will come moments when they almost regret having started upon this path, and sadly, yes, sometimes almost despairingly, they will think of the smiling path which would have stretched before them.5
